Rhymney was declared a Conservation Area in September 1975. The Terrace was built in the early-to-mid 19th century to provide housing for managers and officials employed by the Rhymney Ironworks and are now grade II listed.

The original specification for re-roofing The Terrace called for Welsh slate but the length of the rafters (8.5m) and their very low pitch (just 16 degrees) presented a significant challenge in being able to guarantee the roof being watertight.

Fortunately, as Keith Saunders, Technical Officer at Caerphilly County Council's Environment Directorate, explains: "SSQ were prepared to offer the watertightness guarantee we required using Riverstone roofing slate [in extra large sizes]. Since Riverstone roofing slates were used at Christ College, Brecon, they were readily accepted by both Cadw and the HLF for renovation of The Terrace's roofs."
