Grouting, Sealing and Maintenance

Stone is generally thought of as having a hard surface that requires little or no maintenance. Although this perception is true to an extent, like all hard surfaces, its finish will inevitably 'dull' over a period of time. Fortunately, the effects of wear, tear and the environment can be reduced by an effective maintenance programme.

Having carried out trials of many products on SSQ Riverstone architectural stone, we've found the following to be the most effective, doing what they say 'on the tin' and doing so without affecting the stone's natural colour.

Grouting

Grout should be applied over the whole area ensuring that the joints between individual stones are completely filled, any excess should be removed immediately with a damp sponge or cloth.

Sealing

We recommend the use of a sealant to create a protective layer on all internal flooring, cladding and work surfaces which, if used periodically, will maintain the stone's appearance. Although there is no reason why sealants could not be used on external stonework, this is usually more difficult to do and, generally, it's left to its own devices and to weather accordingly. However, this is at the discretion of the building's owner who may consider sealing and protecting areas that are subject to either heavy footfall or are prone to 'abuse'.

We recommend the use of Aqua Mix Ultra-SolvTM sealant with SSQ Riverstone architectural stone. "Ultra-Solv is a premium, no-sheen, natural-look, solvent-based penetrating sealer formulated to provide maximum stain protection, especially in food preparation and serving areas. May also be used as a pre-grouting sealer. Allows moisture vapor transmission. It is also an excellent grout sealer."

Cleaning and maintenance

We recommend Aqua Mix Concentrated Stone & Tile Cleaner, "a super-concentrated, cleaner formulated for everyday use. This neutral cleaner, when used regularly, prevents soap scum build up and hard water deposits and leaves a room smelling clean and fresh."
