Quarry rock face showing where the slate has been extracted.
Excavator removing slabs – notice the white vein of quartz behind it.
A large slab is placed on the belt to enter the quarry and be sawn into tiles.
Large diamond saws are used to trim the slabs into smaller blocks.
The blocks are then split by hand into tiles.
Machines are used to trim the edges and add bevels if required.
At each process the tiles are checked to ensure that inferior slates are removed.
The tiles are then tightly placed into the crates to minimise movement which could cause damage during shipping.
