Nestled in the heart of Stony Stratford’s conservation area, the historic Russell Street School underwent a sensitive yet transformative refurbishment, combining modern roofing performance with traditional aesthetics.
Appointed as principal contractor, Stoic Roofing & Construction led the complex works, with SSQ’s Riverstone Ultra Phyllite Natural Slate chosen to deliver a finish worthy of the building’s heritage and its prominent position in the town centre.
The school’s existing roofs were in poor condition, with several areas suffering from leaks and weather damage. Conservation requirements and the client’s insistence on a long-lasting system led to the specification of SSQ’s Riverstone Ultra slate, renowned for its high quality, natural beauty and robust 75-year guarantee. Other materials supplied included eave and top slates, a dry ridge system, Code 4, 5 and 6 lead, and insulation to complete the high-performance roofing system.
Work began with the careful removal and disposal of existing roof coverings, including the safe extraction of asbestos from one area, which required a sealed environment and licensed specialists to transport it off site.
Working in a busy town centre with restricted access, Stoic Roofing & Construction implemented a tightly managed logistics plan, coordinating deliveries and waste removal with surrounding properties to minimise disruption.

To ensure the safety and continuity of school operations, the most disruptive works, including the roof stripping, re-felting and battening, were completed during the summer holidays. Finishing stages were undertaken during term time, with close collaboration between the contractors and school management to safeguard pupils and staff.
The project included renewal of multiple roof areas, both pitched and flat linked, along with intricate leadwork detailing. Insulation upgrades were incorporated using rigid insulation boards and roll-out insulation, followed by installation of a breather membrane, 25x50mm timber battens and Riverstone slates fixed with 30mm copper nails. Vented eaves and dry ridges system were installed in full accordance with current British Standards, ensuring long term ventilation and weather protection.

Delivered on time and within budget, the project has been met with high praise from the client. The school now enjoys a fresh, revitalised appearance and, most importantly, a completely watertight roof designed to stand the test of time.
Once again, SSQ Riverstone has proven itself the natural choice for conservation-sensitive projects, combining authentic character with enduring technical excellence.
