Set against the backdrop of a private lake within the wider Beaulieu Park development, The Lakes at Lakeview Crescent, Chelmsford, was a distinctive residential scheme delivered by Marden Homes.
Designed to stand apart from the surrounding large-scale builds, the exclusive collection of homes required a slate solution that would balance natural aesthetics with perfect performance.
The specification of SSQ Del Prado natural slate (500x250mm) was central to achieving the vision. Selected for its consistent quality and elegant finish, Del Prado slate provided a natural appearance that joined effortlessly with the varied walling and cladding materials across the development. Its tonal variation echoed the lakeside setting, reinforcing the project’s connection to its environment while maintaining the high-end appeal of the bespoke development.
Installation followed a traditional trussed roof construction, with a warm roof insulation system prepared by the main contractor. CWS completed all works above the trusses, installing the Del Prado slates with precision. Each slate was expertly nailed to battens and carefully detailed around complex features including Velux roof windows, solar installations, dormers, valleys, and flue penetrations. The result is a clean, cohesive roofscape that enhances both performance and visual integrity.
Despite the project providing many logistical challenges, including limited access to the rear of each property and a steep gradient leading down to the water, meaning scaffolding had to be engineered into the slope before rising to roof level and materials transported manually around the site, the slate installation was a success.
The use of Del Prado slate ensured a durable, visually striking finish that defines The Lakes as a calm, high-quality residential area within a fast-growing urban expansion.
