Overlooking the dramatic North Devon coastline, Baggy Cottage is a striking refurbishment and extension of a historic listed property designed to maximise its spectacular sea views while preserving its architectural character.
Delivered by Jamie Brown Roofing & Leadwork Ltd, the project required a roofing solution capable of combining exceptional aesthetics with long-term performance in a highly exposed coastal environment.

A key feature of the design, which specified a high-quality finish, was the extensive slate hanging across half of the building, creating a distinctive façade that complements both the original structure and the contemporary extension. To achieve the desired finish, SSQ Riverstone natural slate (400 x 250mm) was specified for its durability, consistency and timeless appearance.
One of the major challenges was the installation of the slates. Given the property’s exposed position overlooking the sea, particular attention was paid to the slate fixing method.
The Riverstone slates were secured using a combination of copper nails and slate hooks, providing enhanced resistance to strong coastal winds and driving rain. This dual fixing approach ensured the slates were held firmly in place, capable of withstanding harsh winds and weather conditions, and deliver lasting protection while maintaining their visual appeal.
