A Contemporary Home Rooted in the Moray Landscape
Located in Birnie, Elgin, Moray, The Cairn is a thoughtfully designed self-build home that demonstrates how natural slate roofing can enhance both architectural character and long-term building performance. Designed to sit harmoniously within its rural surroundings, the single-storey property prioritises simplicity, durability and energy efficiency, with the roof forming the dominant visual element of the design.
Because the roof is the most prominent elevation of the building, the choice of roofing material was critical. The project team selected SSQ Matacouta Extra Heavy natural slate to deliver a roof that would age gracefully, withstand Scotland’s challenging climate and complement the surrounding landscape.

Why SSQ Matacouta Slate Was Chosen
More than 9,000 SSQ UK Ltd Matacouta Extra Heavy slates, measuring 400 x 220mm and between 10-12mm thick, were installed across the roof. The slate was chosen for its consistency, durability and distinctive blue-black colouring, which works seamlessly alongside the property’s black-stained timber cladding and contemporary architectural detailing.
Natural slate was also selected for its authenticity and longevity. Unlike manufactured alternatives, the slate provides natural variation, depth and texture while offering a lifespan capable of matching or exceeding that of the building itself. This makes it an ideal roofing solution for high-quality self-build and rural residential projects.
Traditional Scottish Slate Roofing Craftsmanship
The roof was installed using traditional Scottish slating techniques in accordance with BS 5534. Slates were fixed over sarking boards and a breathable membrane using centre-fixed double nailing, creating a robust roofing system suited to the exposed location.
A key challenge involved managing the natural thickness variations associated with extra-heavy slate. To achieve a flawless appearance, the slates were carefully sorted into groups of matching thickness before installation. This meticulous process ensured a consistent gauge, uniform coursing and a visually seamless finish across the extensive roof planes.

Integrated Solar Panels and Premium Roof Detailing
One of the standout features of the project is the seamless integration of in-roof solar photovoltaic panels. Unlike many renewable energy installations that interrupt roof aesthetics, the PV system was carefully incorporated within the slate covering without disrupting the coursing pattern, maintaining the clean architectural lines of the roof.
Additional detailing includes lead-lined valleys, precisely executed verges and eaves, matching ridge tiles and carefully integrated rooflights. These details demonstrate how natural slate roofing can accommodate modern building technologies while retaining a traditional and highly refined appearance.
Natural Slate Roofing Built for the Scottish Climate
Situated in an exposed rural location, The Cairn required a roofing material capable of resisting harsh weather conditions year after year. The robust specification of SSQ Matacouta Extra Heavy slate provides exceptional resilience against wind, rain and winter conditions while preserving the architectural integrity of the property.
By combining traditional Scottish roofing craftsmanship, premium natural slate and seamlessly integrated renewable technology, The Cairn demonstrates how contemporary rural homes can achieve outstanding performance, sustainability and timeless design through the careful use of natural slate.
