Heritage Roofing Excellence in a Glasgow Conservation Area
When the owners of Gardenside Avenue in Uddingston, Glasgow, embarked on a re-roofing project, they faced a familiar challenge for historic property owners: how to preserve the character of a period home while ensuring long-term performance.
Located within the Gardenside Avenue Conservation Area, the early 1900s Victorian property required a like-for-like replacement using natural slate to satisfy conservation requirements and maintain its architectural integrity.
To deliver the project, the homeowners appointed Apache Roofing & Building, a contractor with experience in traditional slate roofing and heritage properties.
Why SSQ Matacouta Slate Was Chosen

Selecting the right natural slate was critical to achieving planning compliance and preserving the property’s original appearance. The existing roof would likely have featured Ballachulish or Welsh slate, making colour, texture and overall aesthetic an important consideration.
SSQ’s Matacouta Heavy slate provided the ideal solution. Its traditional appearance closely matched the of the original roof while offering the reliability and consistency expected from a premium natural slate product.

While the project initially began as a straightforward conservation re-roof, Apache Roofing saw an opportunity to enhance the property’s visual appeal through specialist slate craftsmanship. Rather than simply replicating the existing roof, the team proposed introducing decorative slate detailing across the principal elevation to celebrate the character of the Victorian home.
The project incorporated intricate fish-scale detailing at the ridge and eaves, alongside elegant diamond-pattern slate banding. These decorative features transformed the roof into a striking architectural asset while remaining sympathetic to the building’s heritage.
Every slate required to create the fish-scale and diamond patterns was hand-cut and dressed on site. Combined with the roof’s numerous hips and valleys, this level of detailing demanded precision, patience and extensive expertise. The result is a flawless slate roof that showcases the
versatility of Matacouta slate.
Overcoming Project Challenges
The decorative slate features increased the complexity of the project. Handcrafting hundreds of bespoke slates extended the programme by approximately one week beyond the original six-week schedule.
