Location: 2–8 in The Terrace, Rhymney, Wales
Architect: Caerphilly Borough Council Environment Directorate
Slate Used: SSQ Riverstone®, Ultra grade, Grey roofing slate
Rhymney was declared a Conservation Area in September 1975. The Terrace was built in the early-to-mid 19th century to provide housing for managers and officials employed by the Rhymney Ironworks and are now grade II listed.
Fortunately, as Keith Saunders, Technical Officer at Caerphilly County Council’s Environment Directorate, explains: “SSQ were prepared to offer the watertightness guarantee we required using Riverstone roofing slate [in extra large sizes]. Since Riverstone roofing slates were used at Christ College, Brecon, they were readily accepted by both Cadw and the HLF for renovation of The Terrace’s roofs.”
