Christ College, Riverstone Slate

Location: Brecon, Powys
Slate used: SSQ Ultra Riverstone Grey

Christ College is one of Britain’s oldest schools. Originally a Dominican friary, the school was founded first by royal charter in 1541 by King Henry VIII and then, after a period of inactivity, by Act of Parliament in 1855. Today, it is seen as one of the best co-educational, independent boarding and day schools in the country and has around 300 pupils.

The campus is home to a rich variety of ancient and historic buildings including a number that are Grade I listed, for example the 13th-century chapel (above, left), and many that are Grade II listed including School House (above left, background, and right).

In 2001, a 10-year (plus) programme to restore many of the building’s roofs started. Despite being in the heart of south Wales, it was found that many of the buildings were roofed with Cornish Delabole slate rather than Welsh slate. The scale of the project, and on such historically important buildings, meant that an economically viable supply of consistently high-quality roofing slate was needed on a long-term basis. Cadw and the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority considered the use of SSQ Riverstone Grey roofing slate on the basis of quality, consistency, surety of supply, cost and appearance – and approved it…
